That's why we prioritize the health, well-being, and happiness of our breeding pairs and their litters. Livestock dogs

A Loyal Guardian

We breed Great Pyrenees and Akbash dogs from proven working lines. Our puppies are socialized with goats, chickens, ducks, and young children from birth. We keep them with the parents until 12 weeks as they rely on correction from them to learn manners around humans and livestock.

At Livestock Guardian Pups, we recognize that a livestock guardian dog is not just a pet; it's a guardian and companion. Our dogs are raised with love and care from day one, fostering a deep bond between our pups and their future owners. Whether you're a seasoned livestock farmer or a newcomer to raising animals, you can trust that our pups are born and raised to be loyal guardians. They inherit the natural protective instincts of their breeds, and we provide early socialization and training to ensure they develop into trustworthy and dependable protectors. When you bring one of our pups into your life, you gain a loyal guardian who will tirelessly watch over your livestock and become an integral part of your farm or homestead.

"I needed a livestock guardian dog that would protect my flock and get along with my pair of herding dogs. The puppy I purchased was already accustomed to working with herding breeds and the transition has gone so much better than I could have expected."

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Bringing a newborn puppy home is an exciting prospect, but it's essential to ensure they are at least 10 weeks old before adoption for several important reasons:

    1. Socialization Period: Puppies go through a crucial socialization period during their first few weeks of life, typically from around 3 to 14 weeks of age. During this time, they learn valuable skills, behaviors, and social cues from their mother and littermates. By staying with their mother and siblings until at least 10 weeks of age, puppies have the opportunity to develop essential social skills, bite inhibition, and proper play behavior, which can help prevent future behavioral issues.
    2. Physical Development: Puppies undergo significant physical development during their first weeks of life. Their immune systems are not fully developed, and they rely on their mother's milk for essential nutrients and antibodies that provide immunity against diseases. Waiting until 10 weeks of age allows the puppy to receive the necessary nutrients and build a stronger immune system, reducing the risk of health problems when transitioning to a new home.
    3. Behavioral Development: Puppies also go through critical stages of behavioral development during their early weeks. Waiting until they are at least 10 weeks old allows them to mature emotionally and mentally, making it easier for them to adapt to new environments and learn from training and socialization experiences.
    4. Weaning Process: Puppies begin the process of weaning and transitioning to solid food around 4 to 6 weeks of age. Staying with their mother and littermates until 10 weeks ensures they receive the appropriate nutrition during this transition. Puppies that are separated from their mother and litter too early may have difficulty adjusting to solid food and may experience dietary challenges.
    5. Legal and Ethical Considerations: In many places, there are legal regulations and ethical standards in place to ensure that puppies are not separated from their mothers and litters too early. These laws and guidelines are in place to protect the well-being of the animals and promote responsible breeding and adoption practices.

In summary, waiting until a puppy is at least 10 weeks old before adoption is essential for their physical, emotional, and behavioral development. It provides them with the best chance for a healthy and well-adjusted life in their new home, setting the foundation for a strong bond between the puppy and their future owner.

Absolutely, we encourage prospective puppy owners to meet the puppy's parents. We believe that meeting the parents is a crucial part of the adoption process. Our mother dog is always on-site and readily available for you to meet. She plays an integral role in the puppy's early socialization and development. While our male dogs might not always be present on the premises, we can provide detailed information about them. Both parents have been carefully selected for their outstanding temperament, health, and breed-specific qualities. We prioritize responsible breeding practices and aim to produce puppies with the best possible genetic and behavioral traits.

Meet the parents right now, virtually by clicking on "The Parents" tab up above and be prepared to meet them up close when you come to pick out your new puppy!

The health and well-being of our puppies are paramount to us.  Both the mother and father have undergone comprehensive health screenings for breed-specific concerns, including hip dysplasia, eye exams, heart evaluations, and genetic disease screenings. As for the puppy, they have received their initial vaccinations, undergone a thorough veterinary examination, and have been dewormed as needed. Our commitment to health testing ensures that we are producing puppies that are not only genetically sound but also well-prepared for a happy and healthy life in their new homes.
